We highly recommend the morning walk guided by the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. Your guide will lead you straight to the kororā (little blue penguins) nesting boxes, plus show you the best spots to watch birdlife and how to identify the bird calls echoing through the trees.

What's included

DOC Biosecurity Briefing - A Department of Conservation (DOC) Ranger will meet all visitors on arrival for an important biosecurity briefing.

Guided Walk - Let the experts lead the way! Experienced volunteer guides from The Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi will lead you on a walk to see native birdlife in action. Learn about the history of the island, the native plants around you, and how the forest has been restored to its current glory.

Guides will organise guests into small groups based on walking track preference. There are two track options - both with ample opportunities to spot birdlife.

  • Wattle Track - the shorter route is 2 km and takes approximately 1-1.5 hours
  • Kawarau Track - the longer route is 3km and takes up to 2 hours, or maybe longer depending on what you see along the way

Visitor Centre and Views - Finish the tour at the visitor centre where you can browse through informative exhibits while sipping complimentary tea and coffee. Afterwards, take a stroll to the famous Tiritiri Matangi Lighthouse - it's a great spot to have lunch! You'll still have plenty of time to explore the rest of the island on your own afterwards.

Tour overview

  • Learn about the exquisite wildlife, revegetation and history of Tiritiri Matangi
  • Uncover the best spots to see native birds, and learn to identify their calls echoing through the forest
  • See kororā (little blue penguins) in their nesting boxes
  • Finish at the Visitor Centre for complimentary tea and coffee, just steps from New Zealand's oldest lighthouse

Level of fitness

A reasonable level of fitness is required. Walking tracks are either hard surface, grass, or boardwalks, with many wooden steps.

If you have a child in a pushchair, please be prepared for some lifting. Mountain buggies are more suitable than regular pushchairs for the majority of tracks. Alternatively, we recommend travelling with a baby/toddler backpack.

If you'd prefer not to carry your day pack with you during the guided walk, you'll have the option to collect it from the Visitor Centre later.
